A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
