Colombian Leader Warns 'I Will Take Up Arms Once More' if US Intervenes Militarily.

The US President and Colombia's president have intensified the rhetoric of their exchange, heightening strains between the two countries after American military units targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates cocaine mills and processing labs and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Escalating Rhetoric coupled with Allegations

Speaking to the press on Sunday, the American leader hinted at analogous armed intervention against Bogotá, stating the nation is also "very ill" and governed by an unwell individual involved in producing narcotics and selling it to the US."

While Colombia stands as the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly connected to the business.

A Strained Partnership

Colombia was historically a staunch collaborator of the United States in the campaign against drug trafficking and benefited from cross-party backing from American politicians, yet ties have soured significantly after Trump was elected.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is mainly overseen by guerrilla factions like the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, most of its former fighters disbanded following a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Defiant Answer

In response to a query if armed intervention similar to Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump said: "I like the sound of that to me personally."

Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle in the last century, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am neither illegitimate and I am not a drug trafficker," he stated.

"Trump speaks uninformed. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a post.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will transform into a multitude of fighters in the mountains. And should they arrest the president, which many of the country holds in high esteem, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the nation," Petro warned.

From Guerrilla to Leader

Petro spent part of his youth participating of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group although reports indicate to have ever participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he was involved in writing the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago and eventually served as a respected lawmaker. He held the office of mayor of the capital city before being elected president.

"I pledged to abstain from using arms again ... but for the homeland I would take up weapons once more," he said.

Reinforced Protection along with Cross-Political Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister announced that the national leader's security detail had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have expressed support with Trump, but voices from across Colombian politics have rejected the notion of an invasion targeting Colombia.

Political and Financial Sanctions

The US withdrew his travel authorization subsequent to he called on American soldiers to ignore unlawful commands. Months later, it placed economic restrictions targeting Petro, his spouse and several associates.

Simultaneously as the US increased its military presence near Venezuela and striking vessels thought to carry drugs against Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted operations on maritime targets off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
