The Video Platform Provides Viewers Control to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that allows them to reduce the quantity of AI-created content appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the service revealed that it now features over 1 bn content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The new functionality is being tested over the following weeks before a full-scale release. This advancement comes amid a rise in AI content, fueled by recent content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that nearly a tenth of the most rapidly expanding content creators on another major platform exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this content is classified as “AI slop”, a label for inferior, mass-produced content that is frequently absurd or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content produced via AI tools, including AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to provide users the ability to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own likes,” stated a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

TikTok disclosed that there are now over a billion videos on its app tagged as artificially created. Overall, over 100 million media items are submitted to the app each day, making AI content a minor part of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the level of AI content they watch by opening the “manage topic” feature in the app and selecting the AI content topic. Further subjects that currently be adjusted under the setting cover politics, fashion, beauty, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

TikTok’s policies oblige content makers to label lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids dangerous AI impersonations of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is unmarked can be removed under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the service will now attach an AI-generated label to content produced via its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for identifying AI-generated material. This step is aimed to help prevent users from attempting to evade the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

The platform is furthermore introducing a $2m educational fund for specialists and institutions to develop informative material about ethical AI use. This program will support charitable organizations focused on training programming and robotics.

Content Safety Approach

The video-sharing app has supported its moderation strategy, during discussion over plans to lay off a large number of safety staff in the United Kingdom. TikTok is expected to eliminate 439 jobs in its trust and safety division in the UK capital, with worker representatives and online safety experts raising concerns that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead stated that human moderation would remain essential, but AI can protect employees by eliminating the most graphic content prior to it is viewed by people. TikTok announced a notable drop in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the last 12 months due to the use of its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to limit contact with dangerous material as swiftly, which is the area in which a extensive automated help is really helping us process content quickly.”
