Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to question particular decisions from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
